LAVANDER

Latin:  Lavandula angustifolia,  Lavandula
Latvian: lavanda

It is a semi-shrub from which lavender oil is obtained from the leaves and flowers.

The leaves and flowers are also used as a spice. The flowers contain 3% essential

oil, 12% tannins, bitters and resins. Lavender, the systematic arrangement and

names of which scientists still think differently, also belongs to the Mediterranean

plants. In Latvia, they are grown in gardens as ornamental plants and herbs. They

are also nectar plants. They have oppositely arranged, grey-green, lanceolate leaves

with a curled margin. The flowers are double-lipped, blue or violet-blue, collected in

false spikes, which in turn form a spike at the end of the inflorescence. Blooms in

June, July. The fruit is a four-nut drupe.

Drogas collects lavender flowers in full bloom by cutting the peduncles with flowers.

Fresh flowers are used for industrial extraction of essential oil. The chemical

composition of lavender flowers is rich - essential oil, flavonoids, coumarins, tannins.

Due to its properties, lavender is widely used in the pharmaceutical and perfume

industries, but due to its pungent taste, it is rarely used in cooking.

Lavender is a popular spice in Spanish, French and Italian cuisine. It is added to

sauces, soups and green butter.

APPLICATION

Lavender has a diuretic and antispasmodic effect. In folk medicine, alcohol tincture

of lavender oil is used against migraines, palpitations.

Infusion of lavender flowers - pour one tablespoon of the drug with two glasses of

boiling water, let it infuse for 20 minutes, strain, drink the preparation one sip during

the day - it is used as a sedative, against neurosis, palpitations, insomnia.

essential oil are used as an additive to therapeutic baths to relieve neuralgic or

rheumatic pain. Lavender flowers are added to various fragrant mixtures of herbal drugs, which are

used to aromatize the air in rooms, they are often used in pillows against overwork,
