From 28 until 31th August, Lūznava Manor of Rēzekne municipality will be hosting the first Baltic jazz festival “Škiuņa džezs”, which is aimed at inciting interest in jazz music, promoting cooperation of aspiring and established jazz musicians, and living the magic of jazz music in Latgale, in the special environment of the Lūznava Manor complex. A call for applications for the master classes has been announced, which can be submitted until 15th June.
Those interested in jazz music are invited to participate in the festival master classes – music school and higher education school students, aspiring musicians and other jazz enthusiasts. The festival will offer master classes conducted by jazz music professionals, jam sessions for the festival participants are planned for the evenings, as well as jazz music concerts.
The idea of the jazz festival at the Lūznava Manor was inspired by the feeling of change – in September 2018, the Jazz Music Department was created at Jānis Ivanovs’ Rēzekne Music Secondary School, the director of which became jazz musician and composer Toms Lipskis. Starting work in Latgale, he had the idea to create a jazz festival in Lūznava, thus also taking upon himself the artistic direction of the future festival. At the end of the summer of 2018, the jazz festival introductory concert “Jazz. Anticipation” (“Džezs. Priekšsajūta”) was performed in two concert programmes in the “Culture Shed” (“Kulturys škiunis”) of Lūznava, thus marking the time and place of the festival. Unfortunately, in autumn Toms passed too soon, but in honour of the work he had started and devoting the festival to the memory of Toms Lipskis, Lūznava Manor will be hosting the first Baltic jazz festival “Škiuņa džezs” from 28 until 31th August with the motto “Continuation!”. Continuation of the ideas initiated by Toms, continuation of jazz music, continuation of the passing of the knowledge of experienced jazz musicians to the young ones. The new artistic director of the festival Lauris Amantovs has undertaken to maintain the ideas and the zest of the festival beginnings.
One of the aims of the festival is to promote the growth and education of aspiring jazz musicians in particular, which is why the festival will start with the jazz master classes, for which music and higher education school students, aspiring musicians, and other jazz enthusiasts from the three Baltic states are invited to apply to gain professional experience from: Vita Rusaityte (LT) vocals, improvisation and ensemble; Skirmantas Sasnauskas (LT) trombone and other wind instruments, ensemble, improvisation; Indriķis Veitners (LV) saxophone and other wind instruments, improvisation, ensemble; Siim Aimla (EE) saxophone and other wind instruments, ensemble, improvisation; Ara Yaralyan (EE) contrabass, improvisation and ensemble; Madara Kalniņa (LV) keyboard instruments, ensemble and improvisation. All the other instruments are also invited to apply to expand their knowledge and learn interplay and improvisation in ensembles, especially percussion instruments.
